Piscataway Public Library has been selected by the American Library Association to host the traveling exhibition “World on the Move: 250,000 Years of Human Migration.” This exhibition, developed by the American Anthropological Association and the Smithsonian’s Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, will travel to fifteen libraries across the United States from March 2023-August 2025.
The focus of the exhibit is migration histories, providing examples through case studies and personal histories, to encourage viewers to think about their own migration and the migration of others. There are thought-provoking questions throughout the exhibit: Why do we move? Where do we come from? How does migration change us? Where are we going?
Learn more by visiting understandingmigration.org.
The exhibit will be available for viewing at Kennedy Library (500 Hoes Lane) September 28 through October 27, 2024 during the library’s open hours:
Monday-Thursday | 10am-9pm
Friday & Saturday | 10am-5pm
Sunday | 1-5pm
Docents will be available to guide you through the various modules of the exhibit during select times.
We will be offering many World on the Move related events, including author visits, panel discussions, book and film discussions, and more!
My Journey to Piscataway:
To complement the exhibit, we are collecting stories from community members about their Journey to Piscataway! Starting on May 11 and running through July 15, interested community members can send their story (up to 500 words, please include up to 2 pictures) to wotm@piscatawaylibrary.org. Submissions will be displayed throughout the Library for the duration of the exhibit.
Volunteering for Teens:
This exhibit will also bring with it MANY volunteer opportunities! If you are even slightly interested in volunteering, we recommend that you attend an orientation this summer to make sure you are enrolled. Any volunteer questions should be directed to teens@piscataway.library.org.
