Edvard Munch, The Scream, 1910   Emerging out of Europe at the dawn of the 20th century, Expressionist art is characterized by garish colors, flattened figures, tense linework, and distorted perspectives. The Expressionists sought to depict the world as it felt rather than how it looked, hoping to convey the isolation and anxiety of modern existence.
