PLA TEEN INTERNSHIP SUMMER 2019

Description:

Do you have an idea for a project that explores an issue you are passionate about? Are you interested in learning about how the Piscataway Public LIbrary connects to your community and in creating ways to increase and improve that connection? You are invited to apply for the Piscataway Public Library Internship. This position is funded by the Public Library Association Inclusive Internship Initiative (PLA-III) and will be located primarily at the Westergard Branch.

Responsibilities:

  • Work approximately 20-25 hours per week with an assigned mentor to create and complete a self-driven project with a focus on serving the Piscataway community.
  • Assist library staff and patrons with various tasks, including shelving and displaying materials
  • Assist library staff with coordinating special projects and programs
  • Attend a kick-off event in Chicago on June 13-15, and present with other PLA-III interns and mentors at a wrap-up event in Washington, D.C. on September 20-22
  • Participate in virtual learning and networking opportunities, provide feedback, and share successes, challenges and opportunities across the PLA-III cohort
  • Work both with library staff as well as independently to create and complete a connected learning project; examples of past intern projects designed include: intergenerational community roundtable, outreach to teens held in local temporary detention center, library resource booklet for at-risk youth, and a panel discussion on the impact of violence on communities

Requirements:

  • Must be 16-19 years old at the time of application
  • Must have completed the second year of high school
  • Must not currently be enrolled in college (those accepted to a school but not actively enrolled in classes are encouraged to apply)
  • Must be able to travel to both Westergard and Kennedy Branches
  • Must be able to attend a kick-off event in Chicago on June 13-15, 2019 AND a wrap-up event in Washington, D.C. on September 20-22, 2019
  • Must be motivated, organized, and possess good communication skills

Schedule & Compensation:

This is a part-time, temporary position. This position allows for flexible scheduling, but must coordinate with assigned mentor.  The schedule will be approximately 25 hours per week for eight weeks (June-August 2019), plus paid travel to the kick-off and wrap up events. Pay rate for this position is $14.58 per hour.

Childrens Librarian / Library Associate

Description

The Children’s Librarian/Library Associate is responsible for outreach and programming for children, with an emphasis on infants through kindergartners. This position is under the supervision of the Head of Children’s Services and responsibilities also include staffing public service desks, collection development, and participation on Library committees and team projects.

Responsibilities

  • Plans and presents a robust schedule of children’s programs both in-house and at community schools with an emphasis on early literacy
  • Participates with the Head of Children’s Services in the formulation, development and completion of departmental and library-wide objectives
  • Maintains a positive relationship with the library’s customers and staff
  • Assists with special projects and other tasks as needed
  • Participates on committees within the library
  • Maintains attractive children’s spaces, including updating books displays
  • Provides exceptional customer service at information desks
  • Represents the Library at community events
  • Follows guidelines for maintaining order in the library
  • Prioritizes professional development through attendance at informational and instructional meetings and workshops
  • Performs all other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s Degree is required. Major in education or related field preferred. Candidates with a Master’s in Library Science will be considered at the Junior Librarian title.
  • Successful candidate will demonstrate a passion for working with young people from birth through elementary school and familiarity with children’s literature.
  • Experience in early childhood education or working with children in an educational or recreational setting is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, courteously, and effectively with library patrons and staff.
  • Ability to travel between library buildings, as well as to local schools and other outreach opportunities.

Schedule

Approximately 17 hours per week: Tuesday 9:30AM-2:30PM; Wednesday 9:30AM-5PM; Thursday 9:30AM-2:30PM. Two Saturdays per month. Opportunity for additional hours on a substitute basis.

Compensation

$27.86 per hour for bachelor’s degree in early childhood education and/or three years experience in early education, or $33.09 per hour for a librarian with MLS and New Jersey professional librarian certificate.
