Piscataway’s Doug Baldwin Named Librarian of the Year

Doug Baldwin, Piscataway Public Library’s Associate Director, was recently named the New Jersey Library Association’s Librarian of the Year. Doug’s duties at the Piscataway Public Library include coordinating the MiY Makerspace, where local residents can use 3D printers, a Glowforge laser cutter, sewing machines, and other equipment, or take classes ranging from coding to crochet. Doug also presents STEM-based events and classes for children, teens, and adults, and manages public computing in addition to his administrative responsibilities.

Doug serves the greater library community through leadership in statewide organizations, including NJLA and MentorNJ, a program sponsored by LibraryLinkNJ and the New Jersey State Library, and works part-time at the Morristown & Morris Township Library. Doug is one of the co-founders of New Jersey Makers Day, a statewide celebration of STEM and making. Started in 2015, New Jersey Makers Day has grown to include participation from over 300 sites, hosting over 83,000 people in 2019, the last time it was able to be held in-person.

Heidi Cramer, Piscataway Public Library’s Director, commends the recognition, “The Librarian of the Year award is a wonderful acknowledgment
of Doug’s contributions to the New Jersey Library community. He is generous with his expertise and fosters a culture of learning and collaboration. I join the entire Piscataway Public Library staff in congratulating Doug.”

Doug is a graduate of both Rutgers University (BA, MLIS) and Montclair State University (MA) and has previously received awards including Library Journal Mover and Shaker (2017), NJLA’s Library Service Award (2016), Commendation – American Association of School Librarians (2015), and Commendation – NJ State Legislature (Assembly and Senate) (2014).

Doug was nominated by his colleagues at Piscataway Public Library, LibraryLinkNJ, Maplewood Memorial Library, and Gloucester County Library System.
