New Jersey Makers Day

New Jersey Makers Day is almost here. The 3rd Annual NEW JERSEY MAKERS DAY (NJMD) will happen on March 24, 25 & 26! This is a statewide celebration of maker culture, tinkering and creative participation. There will be events for teens and children at both branches on Friday afternoon, activities for ALL AGES throughout the day on Saturday at Kennedy Library, and crafters sharing and selling handmade items at Kennedy Library on Sunday.


Most Loved Library of 2017 

Piscataway Public Library was named one of the most loved libraries of 2017 according to hulafrog, a national network of local community guides for parents. Through hulafrog you can also view our upcoming events.

 


Saturday, April 1, 9:30am

We are accepting applications for Piscataway resident high school students in grades 9-12 for our 2017 Build it Better Design Challenge.

During the competition students will be divided into teams and local experts will guide the teams through essential stages, including planning, designing, building, and marketing. Final products will be evaluated by a panel of judges, and the members of the winning team will each receive a $100 scholarship.

Registration is limited to 25 participants. Please register online by visiting piscatawaylibrary.org/content/build-it-better or calling 732-463-1633 x6. Lunch will be provided for participants at this all-day event.

This competition, including scholarships, is made possible by a generous donation from Piscataway resident George Tsacnaris, and in partnership with ManufactureNJ, Rutgers University & Soldering Sunday.


LMxAC Shared Calendar

Small Business Workshop

On March 10 from 1:00-2:00pm, Kennedy Library will be hosting the Small Business Workshop to educate local business owners and entrepreneurs about starting and registering businesses in the state.  This workshop includes:

  • Types of Business Ownership
  • Registering your Business
  • Reporting Business Income
  • Meeting Employer Responsibilities
  • Understanding Sales and Use Tax
  • and…Your Questions

Local Makers Market

We invite you to join us on Sunday, March 26 from 1:00-4:00pm for our first NJ Makers Day Local Makers Market at the Piscataway Public Library! This event is FREE and open to the public no matter where you are from!

We will be featuring local makers and creators who will be exhibiting and selling their products and creations of all kinds. It is a great way to learn about how these artists and artisans go about their craft, as well as take home some unique and custom products locally made right here in Piscataway!

Items to Borrow!

In addition to headphones, both branches of the library now have bicycle locks and phone chargers for loan. These items are intended for in-house loan only, so will be due back the same day that they are borrowed, but they can be very useful to you while you are visiting the library building. We also offer some great resources that you can take home, including large 8.5x10 magnifiers (that can fit over the page of a book, magazine or newspaper), Kill a Watt EZ (a tool to measure how much energy you are using for specific devices in your home), and museum passes.

Tech @ Your Fingertips

We're always open at our virtual library where you have access to your account (with card and PIN) for renewals, holds, and eBooks and eAudio, plus tons of informational and other helpful resources. In addition to all of the print content we have available, your Piscataway Library card allows you access to FREE eBooks, downloadable audiobooks, digital magazines, and streaming movie service. With a valid library card, you have more titles at your fingertips than you ever thought possible. If you are being denied online access for any reason, please contact either branch to update your account!

Your library is ready to help you get started accessing all of our electronic collections. Our Techie Tutor is also available at both branches to help with virtually any question about using your laptop, tablet, or smartphone at scheduled times (please remember to bring your power cord!) and we can offer help with eLibraryOverDrivehoopla, and Zinio

WE HAVE WIRELESS PRINTING!

Kennedy and Westergard Libraries have free wireless internet access 24/7, and now we also have wireless printing accessible while the library is open. You can print in black and white or color from your personal laptop, smartphone or mobile device. You will connect to select wifi networks in order to access wireless printing. Standard printing costs apply. Detailed instructions can be found here.


Art-in-the-Round Series

Join us on Sunday, March 12 from 1:30-4:30pm for a hands-on pottery wheel demonstration, and on Sunday, March 19 from 1:30-4:30pm to learn beading from a jewelry artist. No registration is required for either of these programs.

Funding for this series has been provided by the Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders through a grant from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State.

Piscataway Public Library has many helpful resources for immigrants and new Americans! Call Kennedy Library at 732-463-1633 x6 or Westergard Library at 732-752-1166 x6 for further information.

Volunteer Fair

Join us at our 3nd Annual Volunteer Fair at Kennedy Library on Saturday, March 11, 2017, 1:00-4:00pm. Older teens and adults are welcome to swing by to uncover some hidden volunteer opportunities, or to find out more about local organizations and the great work that they are doing. Volunteer hours are fabulous for resumes and applications, but they also provide you with the kinds of well-rounded experiences that you can't always find elsewhere. Give more by giving back!


Help the library, shop on AmazonSmile

Did you know Amazon will give back a percentage of your purchases to a non-profit organization of your selection? It's called AmazonSmile. You can help support the Friends of the Piscataway Public Library by setting up your AmazonSmile account, and then using it to make Amazon purchases. Amazon will donate 0.5% of all your AmazonSmile eligible purchases to the Friends. All funds raised by the Friends are donated back to the Library to support programming, facility upgrades, and more!

Piscataway Township Document Shredding

Piscataway Township Clean Communities & Recycling Programs are sponsoring the 2017 "SHRED IT & FORGET IT" free mobile community paper shredding events.

The first event will be held Saturday, March 25 at Quibbletown Park, 141 Academy Street, from 9:00am-12:00pm or until the truck is full.

Can't make it? The truck will be back Saturday, April 8 and Saturday, April 22 at Riverside Park.


Check It Out @ Hoopla

Use your library card to access movies, music, ebooks, audiobooks, comics, and more! Items can be viewed on your computer or via the Hoopla app on mobile devices like Kindle, iPad, iPhone, and Android. Some content (like music and audiobooks) can be downloaded right onto your device so you don't have to use up data to access it. Plus, you have simultaneous access to the content, so you never have to wait for someone else to return it before you can view. You can borrow up to five items each month.
