2018 MiY Summer Workshop Programs

If your child is interested in science, technology, engineering, robotics, and other STEM related topics... then Piscataway Library is the place to be this summer 2018! We have three fantastic and immersive programs going on that will be sure to provide a fun learning experience for those in grades K-12

The Summer of MAKE : Teen Maker Institute is an immersive summer STEAM workshop program for those entering grades 6-12 operated in conjunction with the Piscataway Library Teen Services Department. This new program is designed to provide a much deeper and immersive making and STEM experience for those who are accepted into the program! This program will consist of two groups of 15 teens. Each group will complete 12 projects over a 6-week period from June 27th - August 10th on Wednesdays and Fridays. One group will attend Wednesday and Friday mornings from 11a-1p and the other group will attend Wednesday and Friday afternoons from 2-4pm. To be a part of this unique experience, teens will have to apply for acceptance into the program. As always, projects made during this program will all be make and take home. 

The projects we will be making this summer include:

  • Wifi Weather Station
  • Battlebots on a Budget
  • Keyring Phone Charger
  • Electronic Audio Game
  • Google Cardboard
  • Kinetic Sculptures
  • Musical Box
  • Handheld Labyrinth
  • LED Candle (that can be blown out)
  • Chapstick LED Flashlight
  • Airboat
  • Cardboard Automata
  • Toy Hacking
  • Twinkling Bag

Note: Some projects may be subject to change based on availability of supplies and resources.

Registration will close on May 25th.

We will then hold two group interview sessions to determine which 30 teens will be accepted into the program. Projects for the Teen Maker Institute will include making your own digital watch, light painting, solar charger, hydraulic powered car, birdhouse, and more!

There is no residency restriction for this program.

Tinker Camp (for those entering grades K-5)

Registration for Tinker Camp opens on Monday, June 4th at 10am. To register for any Tinker Camp programs, please visit or call the Kennedy Library Childrens Department at 732-463-1633 x6. 

Tinker Camp is for those entering grades K-5. Only children in either K-2, or 3-5 can be registered, and children cannot register for programs outside their grade group. There are not exceptions to this.

Please note that children can only be registered for TWO Tinker Camp programs. There will be not waiting lists taken - however if spots for a closed program become available, we will offer the opportunity to any child to then register for open available spots on a first-come / first-served basis.

Tinker Camp 2018 is generously funded with support from the Friends of the Piscataway Public Library


Maker Lab (for those entering grades 4-5)

Maker Lab is our open-ended immersive tinkering program where participants will work with long-time educator and Piscataway resident Dave Zirkle on electronics and robotics based projects collaberatively, learning about the Arduino platform and coding environment to prototype various types of projects. This immersive program will be offered in a two week session in the month of August. Each of the sessions will run from 10am-12:30pm from Tuesday-Friday. We will accept 13 participants for this program. The program dates are as follows : 

  •  August 7-10 and August 14-18

Registration for Maker Lab will open in July 2018.

There is no residency restriction for this program.

Note : To register and attend, your teen or tween must be able to attend all 8 sessions with a maximum of 2 excused absences. Teens participating in the Teen Maker Institute are not eligible to participate in this program.
